Here are three tips for designing graphic art for screen printing.
Think About the Purpose
The first step in the design process is to know what your design will be used for. Is it the basis for a brand that you will use across all your products? Or is this a one-off design for something special that is distinct from your other branding? You also need to balance the images and text if your design incorporates both. Screen printed graphic art needs to be eye-catching while still clearly conveying the message within the design.
Choose Your Colors Wisely
In screen printing, you think about more than just the colors that you will use in the design. You also need to consider the color of the surface you are printing on. Certain colors will either not show up against other colors or look different against some base colors. For example, fluorescent colors lose their brightness when printed on darker backgrounds. Some inks also have less than 100% opacity, meaning that you can see the color underneath them.
Don’t Overdo It
“Less is more” applies to many scenarios, but it is especially true when it comes to graphic art for screen printing. Complex designs are not only difficult to print, but they can also distract from your message. Go back to the purpose of your design and step away once you have achieved it. Two or three complimentary colors and strong shapes are usually all you need.
